Camille Souter, one of Ireland’s greatest painters, lives on Achill Island. During her 64-year career, she has received numerous prestigious awards and honours. She is a Saoi of Aosdána, the state-supported association of Irish creative artists. The title is awarded for life and held by at most seven people at a time.

Souter captures light and color, texture and form in intimate, almost abstract paintings of unexpected subjects, which have included landscapes, clowns, fish, boxers and slaughterhouses. Large exhibitions of her paintings are rare. This is the first exhibition devoted to her work in her home county of Mayo since 1999. Her last retrospective was in 2001.

The Camille Souter exhibition opens on October 19th in conjunction with Custom House Studios, to coincide with the artist’s 90th birthday on October 22nd.
