David Mach was the star of this year’s Galway International Arts Festival, showing installations, sculptures and collages in his critically acclaimed exhibition ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’. For this year’s Westival, he is bringing new versions of his sold-out collages to Westport.

The artist has been making collage pieces out of comics for some time now, drawn to the skilled draughtsmanship of the Commando books and other comics like The Hornet, The Hotspur, Beano, The Dandy and Bunty.

“They are completely inspiring to me in terms of ideas and subject matter from humour to war, from gender to politics, through landscapes of every hue,” the artist explains. “These are not digital images, they are drawn. They seem more human somehow because of that.”

The drama and pathos of these characters and stories allow the artist to explore notions of humanity, helping him to address technology and ‘how we wade through that on our way to what we call progress’.
