‘Molloy has played a vital role in the evolution of Irish music’ – Irish Central
The hallowed venue of Holy Trinity Church is a fitting setting for what promises to be a truly heavenly occasion: The launch of Matt Molloy’s first solo album in over two decades. Entitled ‘Back to the Island’, the album contains Matt’s inimitable take on tunes ‘as old as the ditch’ (as he says himself), as well as a selection of his own original compositions – new tunes, but distillations of the same unique spirit that has always marked out his incredible flute playing.
Chieftains legend and one of Westport’s most-famous citizens, Matt is considered one of our country’s most brilliant living musicians. His style, which adapts piping techniques to the flute, has had an enormous influence on many contemporary flute players, opening up a world of fiddle and accordion tunes that had been off limits before his experimentation and mastery showed the way. Put that in your pipe!
