Sheelyn studied Visual Communications at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and graduated with a Bachelor of Design in 1987. It was there that she became interested in relief cut printmaking, primaraily in the form of Woodcut and Linocut.
Continuing in the vein of relief printmaking Sheelyn went on to have two solo exhibitions in the 90’s which were held in The Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, Dublin and in Blackburn House Liverpool.
This special exhibition titled Mainly Birds will be hosted by Ally and Paul in The Townhouse as part of the Westival Festival’s 2020 Visual Arts experience. The exhibition embodies a number of original linocut prints which have been created since her departure from her family business – Westport House in 2018.
Mainly Birds is a selection of works undertaken in the last 2 years, after a period of 15 years during which her printmaking escapades were put on the back burner. The exhibition will be running daily in The Townhouse from Saturday 17th of October through to Tuesday 27th of October.
The technique involves producing a drawing or an image and transferring it onto either a block of wood or linoleum. You can either trace from the original drawing or draw directly onto the block, depending on how many colours you are using. Then you carve your image with a knife or a gauge. The areas that appear in relief or are raised will produce a part of the finished image. You then roll the block of wood or linocut and transfer the image onto paper.
