Despite the current lockdown restrictions, the Westival team have been busy exploring ways of digitally connecting with artists and musicians from around the globe and therefore instigating new ties with the creative world and Westport.  Our first virtual trip takes us across the Atlantic and we are thrilled to present in association with Westport Jazz, a one-off free broadcast pop-up gig with the Emmet Cohen Trio, all the way from Harlem, New York City.

Along with Cohen the trio line-up is Jamaican bassist Russel Hall and Kyle Poole on the drums. On the evening special guests will be Harry Allen (tenor saxophone) and Warren Vache (coronet-trumpet).

Emmet attended the Manhattan School of Music and The Frost School of Music in Miami. Over the past ten years he usually was to be heard in Smoke, Smalls, Dizzy's, The Blue Note and other jazz clubs in New York.

During the coronavirus lockdowns Cohen developed 'Live from Emmet's Place' a series of weekly performances by his trio and special guests, livestreamed from his Harlem apartment. These concerts which have received millions of internet views worldwide are noteworthy for their superb technical production despite the space restrictions of a typical Manhattan apartment and the constraints of livestreaming. Sound, lighting, camerawork, movement and visuals are excellent.

Allied to all of this is Emmet's dynamic, charismatic and infectious stage' presence and musicianship resulting in a small club-like atmosphere but with a big impact. The programme of the upcoming gig in association with Westival comprises mostly of standards, some well-known, some less so.

This will be the 53rd weekly internet broadcast gig for Cohen and his trio, during which time they have covered a vast repertoire in association with many special guests. The Westival associated broadcast has Warren Vache, noted for his finesse, joyous invention and unassuming charm, on coronet-trumpet and Harry Allen on the tenor saxophone with his full-on elegant sound, as if the avant-garde never happened.

Westival alongside Westport Jazz are delighted to be associated with this Emmet Cohen internet broadcast gig and we hope you can all log on and enjoy one of New York’s finest Jazz trios.
