A breath-based interactive audio-visual bilingual exhibition by Derval Dunford www.sui.ie
Master creator John Dunford recorded and co-produced the iconic Waterboys Fisherman Blues album, he worked with Planxty, Clannad, Moving Hearts, De Dannan, and he masterminded Irish traditional musician Sharon Shannon’s career.
In 2023 John was the third Dunford brother to die from lung cancer. Tom and Steve went before him. This breath-based fire and water experience is dedicated to John’s life and breath.
He had fire energy inside to bring projects to life, and the water energy to let them to flow.
As Anáil arose from Derval’s personal process of breath, horizontal meditation (yoga nidra), nature immersion and ink exploration. Her arts and health process arrived unexpectedly as a response to grief, it brought her enormous joy in the midst of the loss of her third brother.
The fire images arrived in Lanzarote after John’s death, Derval worked outside in the sun on rice paper. Water images arrived on yupo paper by the Lake at Interface Inagh, Connemara. John spent a lot of time in both places enjoying the ocean, sunshine, and rugged landscapes.
Inspired by Irish Philosopher John Moriarty, and author Manchán Magan, this fusion of guided mini breath practices (2 mins), Irish titles, and ink images is a unique interoceptive experience.
As Anáil is a celebration of life and breath, an invitation to experience interconnection and peace.
