The Space Between Real and Shadow

An Exhibit by Breda Burns at The Custom House Studio and Gallery

Opening October 22nd 6pm.

To mark Westival’s 50th anniversary, Breda Burns presents The Space Between Real and Shadow, an Audio/Visual installation that invites audiences into the non-typical brain and explores how we navigate the world differently.

The work began with research into how ADHD shapes the personal and professional lives of artists. For this exhibition, Breda expands that inquiry by incorporating narrative accounts gathered from individuals through recorded interviews. These voices will be woven into sound pieces forming the core of the project, integrated across the three gallery spaces of the Custom House.

Alongside the soundscape, selected quotes will appear as digital text artworks, printed on industrial materials and layered with obscured fragments of images and text. These reflective and refracted surfaces are designed to challenge perception and deepen engagement.

The installation will come together organically during the build and will launch on 22 October. Collaboration lies at the heart of this work, forming part of a growing archive Breda is developing called Artists’ Voices, which amplifies the lived experiences of neurodivergent artists and fosters empathy, awareness, and dialogue.
